You know the feeling. It’s late, the house is quiet, and that old thing you did (or keep doing) walks back into your mind like it pays rent there. You’ve prayed about it. You’ve promised God, and yourself, that this time is different. And still the guilt sits on your chest.
I’ve been there, so I’m not writing this from a pulpit. I’m writing it from the same floor you’ve been kneeling on. Let’s talk about real repentance and being washed clean in the name of Jesus Christ, because Acts 2:38 isn’t a religious slogan. It’s an invitation, and it’s for you tonight.
1. Repentance Is a Turn, Not Just a Tear
Look at the scene. Peter has just preached, and the crowd is cut to the heart. They ask, “What shall we do?” Peter doesn’t say “feel worse.” He says, “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost” (Acts 2:38, KJV).
The word repent means to change your mind, and then your direction. Crying is fine. I’ve cried plenty. But tears without a turn are just weather. Acts 3:19 says to repent and be converted so your sins can be blotted out. Notice the order: you turn, and God wipes.
Ask yourself honestly: am I sorry I got caught, or am I ready to walk the other way?
2. A Heart Turned Toward Heaven
Here’s the part we skip. You can’t turn from something without turning toward Someone. Paul tells us to set our minds on things above, not on things on the earth (Colossians 3:2). Jesus said where your treasure is, your heart follows (Matthew 6:21).
Think about a compass. It doesn’t fight north. It just points there, and everything else gets measured against it. When your heart is pointed toward Heaven, the pull of the old life doesn’t vanish overnight, but it stops being your north.
I remember when I first understood this. I’d been trying to stop sinning with pure willpower, like holding my breath underwater. It never lasted. What changed me was fixing my eyes on Jesus instead of on my failures.
3. Washed Clean Means Clean
Some of you believe God forgave you but is still a little disappointed. Hear me: that’s not the gospel.
Paul told the Corinthians, after listing some ugly sins, “And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus” (1 Corinthians 6:11). Were. Past tense. Isaiah 1:18 says though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.
Baptism in the name of Jesus Christ is the public, physical stand you take. You go down into the water as a person burying the old life, and you come up with a clean record. It’s not a performance. It’s obedience that says, “I belong to Him now.”
4. The Gift Nobody Should Skip
Don’t miss the second half of Acts 2:38. Forgiveness is not the finish line. “Ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”
God doesn’t just wipe the slate and leave you alone with it. He moves in. The Spirit gives you power to say no, comfort when you’re weak, and a voice that says “this is the way” when you’re confused (Romans 8:11, 14). Peter even says the promise is for you, your children, and everyone far off, as many as the Lord our God shall call (Acts 2:39). That includes you, wherever you’re reading this.
Take This Home Today
Sit with these before you close the page:
- What am I still holding that God has already offered to wash away?
- What would “turning” look like this week? Name one concrete step.
- Have I obeyed the whole of Acts 2:38, or only the parts that felt comfortable?
- Who can I tell that I’m turning my heart toward Heaven, so I’m not doing this alone?
Write your answers down. Don’t just think them.
Don’t Close This Tab the Same Way You Opened It
Peter was the man who denied Jesus three times, and he’s the one who stood up and preached this. If God can use him, wash him, and fill him, He can do the same with you.
So turn. Right now, in whatever room you’re in. Tell Jesus you’re done carrying it. Then take the next step of obedience, and don’t wait for a perfect feeling.
